January 2024
Message from the Principal
Dear Zoller Elementary School Community,
Happy New Year! We hope this newsletter finds you well and that you had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. As we kick off the new year, we have some important information to share regarding attendance, tardiness, our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, and winter weather precautions.
Attendance Matters:
We would like to remind all parents and guardians about the importance of regular school attendance. Consistent attendance is crucial for your child's academic success and social development. If your child is unable to attend school due to illness or any other reason, please ensure you notify the attendance office as soon as possible. We appreciate your cooperation in making attendance a top priority.
An excuse is required for any absence to be considered legal. A list of legal absence reasons are available at: schenectadyschools.org/page/attendance-policy
Tardiness Policy:
Punctuality is a valuable habit that sets the tone for a successful day of learning. We kindly request that all students arrive to school on time. Students who arrive after 8:00 AM are marked tardy. Tardiness not only disrupts your child's learning but can also impact the entire class. Children who arrive late often miss core math and English Language Arts instruction. If your child is consistently arriving late, please reach out to his or her teacher or the school office so that we can work together to address any challenges and support your child in being on-time.
PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports:
Our PBIS program continues to foster a positive and respectful school environment. This month, our focus will be on the core values of respect and kindness. Teachers will be reinforcing these values through classroom activities and discussions. We encourage parents and guardians to reinforce these values at home and celebrate when your child demonstrates positive behavior.
Additionally, we will be recognizing students who have exhibited exemplary behavior at our PBIS assembly on January 12th. Families of those students who are being recognized will receive an invitation from their student's classroom teacher. These awards celebrate the efforts of our students in embodying our school's values and contributing to a positive and inclusive atmosphere.
Winter Weather Precautions:
As we enter the colder months, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. We do recess outside in the winter months when possible.
New Year's Resolutions for Students:
Encourage your child to set academic and personal goals for the new year. Whether it's improving a specific subject, practicing good study habits, or engaging in extracurricular activities, setting achievable goals can help your child stay motivated and focused.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping us create a positive and nurturing learning environment for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the school office.
Wishing you a fantastic start to the new year!
Warm regards,
Mr. O'Connor

Schenectady City School District's ELA program grades K-5
Wit and Wisdom offers a comprehensive English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, addressing various facets of literacy such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The primary aim is to establish a robust foundation in language arts skills. The program stands out for its commitment to textual diversity, incorporating an extensive range of high-quality texts that include both literature and informational materials. This diverse selection exposes students to various genres, cultures, and perspectives, contributing to a more well-rounded understanding of language and literature.
Additionally, Wit and Wisdom places a strong emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills. Through engaging students in meaningful discussions, analysis of complex texts, and exploration of diverse ideas, the program encourages a deep and critical approach to the content at hand.
