Kristin Munrett, Principal of Dr Martin Luther KIng Jr. Elementary School

Mrs. Kristin Munrett became the proud principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in July 2020. Mrs. Munrett has been an educator for over twenty years. Prior to becoming principal, she served for one year as the instructional supervisor at MLK and over 17 years at Hamilton Elementary School as a 2nd grade teacher, 4th grade teacher and Curriculum Instruction Coach. During this time, she was honored to receive the 2017 Schenectady City School District's Teacher of the Year Award.

She enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues and community members to maximize learning opportunities for the students and families that she serves. Mrs. Munrett is excited to be the leader of one of the first Community Schools in the SCSD.  She takes pride in the Community Room where families can come for workshops, a place to do laundry, cook a meal, and network.

She enjoys working alongside community agencies to bring in things such as clothing to our clothing room and food with the mobile food pantry for our families in need. Mrs. Munrett is always looking for innovative ways to enhance her students' education, most recently securing a partnership with a Therapeutic Equine Facility for her students with special needs.

Mrs. Munrett earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Oneonta and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology from the State University of New York at Albany. She earned her School Based Leadership Certificate from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Mrs. Munrett is the proud wife of Jerry and mother to three beautiful children, Erin (high school), Matthew (middle school), and Lauren (elementary school).  Having school age children herself, Mrs. Munrett enjoys bonding with families over similar triumphs and troubles.

Mrs. Munrett is passionate about serving the students of Schenectady and their families. She understands how important a role the school plays by providing a quality education that will prepare students with the skills they need to be successful and make a positive difference in the world.
