From the Principal's Desk

Dear Schenectady High School Community,

Happy Holidays! I hope this message finds you well as we step into December and the second quarter of the school year, which began on November 15. I wanted to share some important updates and upcoming events with you.

Firstly, please take note of the report card schedule. Progress reports for the second quarter, ending on December 22, will be sent home. Your continued support and involvement in your child's education are greatly appreciated.

On Saturday, December 16, our Schenectady High School Parent Empowerment Facilitator, Ms. Shanda Blanks, along with the parent-led group Home & School Alliance, will be hosting the 1st Annual Village Holiday Dinner. This event is open to all SHS Parents, Guardians, and Families. For more information, please reach out to Ms. Blanks at blanksl@schenectadyschools.org. An RSVP form will be sent out soon to help us prepare and ensure a warm welcome for all attendees. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Additionally, I am excited to inform you that Schenectady High School is making significant progress with our redesign work. We are diligently working on reshaping our Leadership Communities to provide clear pathways for our students as they learn and prepare for their careers after school. Alongside our academic redesign, we are collaboratively working on the physical redesign of Schenectady High School.

On December 22nd, our students will actively participate in group work and share their input on what they envision for the redesign of the school building. While these student cohorts may have graduated by the time the building is completed, they will have the unique opportunity to leave their mark on a place they called "home" for four years. Stay tuned for more information as we continue to move forward with these exciting initiatives.

In the latest update from Superintendent Soler's weekly newsbrief, we find the following information:

"We are seeking input as we begin development of a 6-year District Strategic Plan. You are invited to participate in a survey or upcoming focus group. Follow link for more & to sign up: https://www.schenectadyschools.org/page/development-of-scsd-6-year-strategic-plan-2024-2030"

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in creating a positive and enriching educational experience for our young people.

The school-based health centers program, located at Mont Pleasant Middle School and Schenectady High School, is staffed and operated by Hometown Health Centers. Students from Hamilton Elementary can also be seen at Mont Pleasant Middle School, with round-trip transportation provided by the school.  Each site provides medical care and treatment for students enrolled in the program with acute and chronic illness and disease, routine school or sports physicals, required immunization, administration of medication, screenings for vision, hearing, asthma, obesity, and other clinical conditions, without the student having to leave school or have a parent or guardian present.

Students must be enrolled in the School-Based Health Centers program to be seen at the health center at school.  To enroll a student in the program, obtain an enrollment form from the school health center, or download the form here: https://www.hometownhealthcenters.org/

A frequently asked questions (FAQ) sheet can also be downloaded which may help to answer questions about the program.

Starting on December 7th, Freshman Academy will conduct assemblies for both students and parents. These assemblies will take place during the school day for students and in the evening for parents at each middle school. The purpose is to provide information to 8th-grade students and their families about high school opportunities, specifically focusing on the Leadership Communities available, such as STEM, Business, Humanities, Arts, the City As Our Campus Community at Center City, SCCC, and Proctors, along with our Big Picture Program.

During these assemblies, we will share valuable insights into the various opportunities within the mentioned Leadership Communities. Freshman Academy takes pride in recently commemorating the academic achievements of our students who earned a place on the honor roll for quarter 1.
