From the Principal's Desk

Dear Schenectady High School Community,

As we find ourselves in the month of June, it's hard to believe how quickly this school year has flown by. June is a month filled with excitement and numerous events that highlight the achievements and milestones of our young people. Our Regents exams commence on June 4th, so please ensure you are following the schedule closely. We also have the highly anticipated Prom, various award ceremonies, Freshman Academy events, and, of course, our Schenectady High School Graduation. The graduation ceremony will be held on June 27th at 6 PM on the turf field at the high school.

We encourage you to stay connected through this newsletter, our Patriot Post, and the Schenectady High School app for all updates and information. It has truly been a wonderful year, and we are grateful for the unwavering support from our community. Please keep an eye out for upcoming events and information over the summer. Thank you for being a part of our incredible journey this year.

In addition, June is Pride Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion. At Schenectady High School, we are proud to celebrate and honor our diverse population of students. We believe in fostering an environment where every student feels valued and respected.

On Wednesday, May 22nd, twenty seven Schenectady High School students, consisting of seventeen teams, participated in the 5th Annual Business Plan Competition at SUNY Schenectady. Students developed business plans and presented them to local business owners, SUNY Schenectady staff, SHS staff, and district administration. Students challenged themselves to create a business and their effort and attention to detail was incredible. Students incorporated personal stories, financial data, marketing strategies, prototypes, and samples. It was evident in their preparation that the students were engaged and excited to show off their efforts. Prizes were awarded to the top five teams.

The winning teams were:

1st Place: Sumayaa Mohammed & Hutashan Hardat, Sweet Heaven's Delight

2nd Place: Izaiah Jones, Impact Zone 81

3rd Place: Ramesh Ramoatar, Munchies Vending

4th Place: Jerrmey Appan, Tropical Treats

5th Place: Chandanie Sugrim, Ashley's Caribbean Grocery Store

Everyone did an amazing job and we look forward to continuing this yearly event with SUNY Schenectady. Thank you to Ms. Peek at the high school and Matthew Farron at SUNY Schenectady for organizing the event. We also want to thank The Schenectady Educational Foundation for making this event possible.

From Ms. Lamb: I am pleased to announce that the Serenaders Choir took second place in our class on Friday, May 24, at the Music in the Parks festival in Massachusetts. Perhaps even more exciting was that our own Rah'Shaun "Boogie" Cook took the prize for Outstanding Vocalist out of all 11 schools that performed. I am very proud of all the students and look forward to giving them this experience in the future! See pics below!

From Mr. Casano: Flame the Band came to Schenectady High School May 22nd to put on a stellar performance.   This large ensemble came in and started off with a bang. Their opening number was a cover of Pharell’s Happy and it seemed to get the house into a groove.   Providing a larger set up, the band delivered on dynamic range, incredible vocal harmonies and a great energy. Debbie Woodruff kept the energy up with her dancing. While the high school was off to a rough start for the event, Flame came prepared. Michelle King did not hesitate to let the power loose from her voice.

David LaGrange was the perfect drummer to keep rhythm and lay out the foundation along with bassist Nick Robinson and conga players Shawn Lehr, Karl Blanchard, Joe Magliocca. Their list covered music from the beginning of rock and roll with Bill Haley and Comets to contemporary artists like Lady Gaga. When they came to the break in Shout by the Isley Brothers, the band took control of the audience and got them reeled right in.

“Flame, a group of talented musicians from upstate New York who happen to have disabilities, has been capturing the world’s attention for more than a decade. In 2003, Lexington, an agency in Fulton County, NY that supports people with developmental disabilities, held a talent show from which Flame was born.”-
