Washington Irving Educational Center is located in the heart of Schenectady’s Hamilton Hill neighborhood and has been serving the adult population of Schenectady county for over 50 years.
Schenectady City School’s alternative education program is one of the largest and most active centers in New York State.
In addition to offering career readiness and vocational training programs, Washington Irving serves over 1,000 adult students (over 21) and 250 youth students (under 21) who are pursuing a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma by taking the GED Exam, each year.
Washington Irving has served over 400 English learners in our ESL classes from complete non-speakers through fluency in reading and writing.
We continue to collaborate with Schenectady County Community College to provide enhanced academic programs. SCCC provides additional transitional programming and staff to help students enter college and career programs in Schenectady.
In addition to adult education programs, WIEC also provides K-12 academics at the Schenectady County Correctional Facility. Teachers, counselors and teacher’s aides work full time at the correctional facility to ensure that youth remain current with their academics in their home schools or pursue the New York State High School Equivalency Diploma with the adult population.
Washington Irving operates six additional satellite locations throughout the city, offers 100 courses throughout the year at many school locations, a community closet and provides free/reduced meals for students.
