Bernice Rivera was elected to a second term on the board of education in 2020. Her current term runs through 2023.
Ms. Rivera is a member of the Audit Committee, Safety Committee and BOE Handbook Ad hoc Committee. She is also a NYS School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Voting Member and a member of the Teacher Center Policy Board.
Ms. Rivera is liaison to Yates Elementary School, Mont Pleasant Middle School and Steinmetz Career and Leadership Academy (SCLA).
What do you enjoy most about being a board member for our district?
I thoroughly enjoy getting to know our students, families/community and staff and being a partner and collaborator to impact systemic changes in education that benefit all of our youth in Schenectady.
You've been visiting schools and attending districts events. What has been your favorite school or student-related moment so far this year?
There have been many this year, but I REALLY enjoyed visiting the kindergarteners at MLK and the 5th graders at PV. Getting to know our students, conversing, engaging, learning and laughing with them inspires, invigorates and consistently reminds me of the ultimate reason why I'm an educator and BOE member. .
What's one thing you would like our school community to know about you that they probably don't already?
I love to travel domestically and internationally, and I hope to visit at least two countries on every continent in the next few years.
