Superintendent's Brief

SUPERINTENDENT'S BRIEF

Good afternoon,

I hope your week was as good as mine. We had so many great and fun things going on.

I'll start by sharing last weekend Best Buy presented us with a donation valued at more than $14,000 for our eSports Program at Schenectady High School. We are grateful to Best Buy for selecting our district for the donation which was the result of a store competition won by Best Buy. Dr. Cotto, Mrs. Young, Mr. Yauchler, a group of students, and I accepted a celebratory check last Sunday at the store event held after hours. Thank you to Best Buy. The award includes gaming laptops and dell monitors, a $5,000 Intel cash grant, Generation eSports curriculum, and Norton Software.

On Tuesday, I had the great honor of being the Hispanic Heritage Month keynote speaker for an event held by the New York State Comptroller's Office and receiving a proclamation from the comptroller. The event was a fantastic celebration of music and Hispanic culture. I had the opportunity to share a little about myself and my culture as well as, share some facts and statistics about Latinos in America. I am grateful to Mr. DiNapoli, the NYS Comptroller, and to those who planned this festive event. I was honored to be invited, to speak and be recognized.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned how swimming is now part of the third grade physical education program. I also mentioned that I might jump in the pool sometime soon. I did just that on Wednesday morning and it was a blast. I'm proud of the team that made this possible. The students were excited to be at the high school pool and jumping in the water to learn valuable skills and have have some fun swimming and splashing around. This is an amazing opportunity for our young students. Thank you to all involved in making this program possible. Thank you also to Dr. Chisolm for jumping in the pool Wednesday along with me.

Thank you to our Central Office Team who came together earlier this week to celebrate the 8th Annual Big Apple Crunch. The crunch is celebrated to bring awareness during apple harvest season and inspire all to eat local with a pledge to bite into a New York State grown apple with a coordinated "crunch." FarmOn! selects a winning photo and will donate $1000 toward a school garden in the organization selected.
