REMINDER: State Testing Coming up in April

There is no school Friday, March 29 (Good Friday) through Monday, April 8.

April 8 is additional day that was not originally on the calendar as a day off. This is the day of the Solar Eclipse. Since we did not use any of our snow/emergency closing days, we will be closed on April 8. Students will return to school on Tuesday, April 9.

State Testing Coming Up

English language Arts (ELA) (Grades 3-8), math (Grades 3-8), and science (Grades 5 and 8) exams must be administered to students across New York State each year. Shortly after we return from April recess, English Language Arts (ELA) testing will be administered to students in grades 3-8.

The tests are designed to measure how well students are mastering the learning standards that guide classroom instruction and help ensure that students are on track to graduate from high school.

Our schools must administer two sessions of the ELA and math tests to students. This means that students will take each subject test over two testing days. The ELA and math tests will be untimed which means that students will have as much time as they need to complete each test session within the confines of the school day.

The 2024 ELA for grades 5-8, math grades 5 and 8 and science tests will be administered with computer-based testing. Students participated in a trial test simulation in January that helped us prepare and ensure that all students have access to the testing platform.

The testing dates are as follows:

English Language Arts (ELA)

  • Grades 3 & 4: April 10, April 11

  • Grade 5: April 16, April 17

  • Grades 6 - 8: April 10, April 11

Science

  • Grades 5 & 8: April 30

Math

  • Grades 3 & 4: May 7, May 8

  • Grade 5: May 9, May 10

  • Grades 6-8: May 7, May 8

We do require that any test refusal/opt-out be submitted in writing to your child's principal. Your request must indicate the exam you are opting your child out of along with a parent/guardian signature. This request must be provided prior to the date of the exam. The expectation for any student not taking an exam is that they will be reading quietly.

If you have any questions, please contact the principal of your child's school.
