Principal of Yates Elementary School
The Schenectady City School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Terrence Sloan as the new Principal of Yates Elementary School effective November 24, 2025. The Board of Education officially approved his appointment at its meeting on October 29.
Sloan is a long-standing and dedicated member of the Schenectady City School District, having served the community since 2006. He most recently served as the assistant principal of Woodlawn Elementary School for four years. Sloan began his career in Schenectady as an elementary schoolteacher, focusing on building strong foundations in reading and mathematics. His teaching was centered on helping students develop essential academic skills and building their confidence as learners. He later transitioned into a district instructional coach role, where he collaborated with teachers across the district to strengthen classroom practices, refine instructional strategies, and support effective classroom management.
Beyond the classroom and administration, Sloan dedicated 12 years to serving as the Varsity Boys Soccer Coach and as a member of the Section 2 Soccer Committee. In this role, he guided student-athletes, promoting sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork.
Sloan is deeply committed to lifelong learning and professional growth. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Child Development from SUNY Oneonta. He furthered his education with a Master of Education degree in Mathematics and Literacy from Walden University and a master’s degree in educational administration from SUNY Plattsburgh.
