District Update Banner

Good afternoon,

We will start our update today by offering a huge congratulations to Mr. Joe DiCaprio, who was selected by Dr. Cotto to be the Deputy Superintendent of our district. His appointment was approved by the Board of Education on Wednesday evening.

Anyone who knows Mr. DiCaprio is well aware of his unwavering commitment to our students, faculty and staff, and the Schenectady community. It is evident how special this school community is to him. He grew up in Schenectady, attended our schools from elementary through high school, and returned to work as an elementary principal from 2008-2015. He left for a brief time to work as an elementary school principal in Niskayuna, and returned to Schenectady schools in 2021 to serve first as the executive director of elementary schools and most recently as the assistant superintendent of District Initiatives, Planning, and Accountability (DIPA).

Mr. DiCaprio is committed to making a difference in the lives of Schenectady families. He is out and about in our schools and community every day, so if you don't know him yet, you are likely to meet him soon. Please join us in congratulating Mr. DiCaprio as he moves into this new leadership role. Daily Gazette article (March 22, 2024)

Dr. Cotto took the superintendent's seat at the Board of Eduction meeting for this first time this week. He will continue to do so moving forward as he transitions into his new role of superintendent.

He continues to work with Superintendent Soler, who as we have said before, is working in the background, mentoring and helping Dr. Cotto make a smooth transition. He attended his first Superintendent Capital Region meeting with Superintendent Soler this week.

Dr. Cotto continues to meet with department teams. Next week, he will be meeting with the Student Support Services team, the Safety team, and members of District Initiatives, Planning, and Accountability. Following the April recess, he will begin meeting with each of the school principals.

Staffing meetings for 2024-2025 Budget planning were held on Monday and Tuesday with all principals. Dr. Cotto also continues to meet with SEI regarding capital project planning.

Dr. Cotto is meeting with a variety of community leaders and attending community events. Among the meetings this week, he attended the Schenectady Breakfast Club with other Schenectady community leaders at the Schenectady Chamber of Commerce office. He remains committed to building relationships with community leaders and looks forward to meeting and talking with many others over the next few months.

2024-2025 Calendar
On Wednesday, the Board of Education approved the 2024-2025 School Calendar. New to the calendar is the observance of Eid al-Fitr on March 31, 2025.

Eid al-Fitr is one of two major holidays celebrated by Muslims and commemorates the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is commemorated by a large, community-wide prayer service in the morning, followed by meals and conversation with friends and family.

Holi, which was added to the district calendar in 2022-23, is included for the third year and Yom Kippur is included again after being added to the 2023-24 calendar.

This aligns with the district's efforts to be responsive and inclusive to all in the Schenectady community.
