Superintendent's Brief

SUPERINTENDENT'S BRIEF

Good afternoon,

Happy Summer, school is out, graduation is over and the final moving up ceremonies wrapped up earlier today. I want to congratulate all students on their hard work this school year. We are all very proud.

Like I mentioned, the Schenectady High School Class of 2023 graduation ceremony was held on Thursday evening. The Keynote speech was delivered by Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, who told his story of growing up in Schenectady, attending MLK, and moving on to Colgate, Harvard and Oxford. The ceremony was held on the turf field and live streamed to more than 1,000 viewers at home. Watch the full ceremony on our YouTube page.

Carrie White

Earlier this week, Carrie White, a grade 2 teacher at Yates was honored by the Second Step program as "Second Step Educator of the Year". White is one of eight educators nationwide, the only one in New York,  to be selected for the top award.

Second Step is a research-based social-emotional learning (SEL) program for students in grades Pre-K through grade 8,  that helps students build valuable life skills that nurture positive relationships, manage emotions and set goals so they can thrive. Second Step was introduced into our elementary schools last school year.

According to Second Step, nominations were judged by a panel of Committee for Children staff. The judging criteria included impact, innovation, generalization, and learner-centered approach.

On Wednesday evening, our first ever district-wide "Extra Mile Awards" were held in the Oneida Middle School Auditorium. The awards honored and recognized dedicated employees who continue to help Schenectady rise.

In May, we celebrated our SHS teams who participated in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge. The winning team, made up of Marques Johnson and Omarion Pedragon from Schenectady High School, with their teacher Laurie Rasmussen and principal Dr. Ady Pina, visited the New York Stock Exchange

Students were hosted by TradeMas and had the opportunity to chat with the Founder & CEO of the company, Frank Masiello, about his inspiring career path and saw firsthand what really happens at the exchange.

The trip was an amazing opportunity that included a chauffeured Mercedes van, the visit to the Stock Exchange, a three-course lunch and a visit to the 911 Memorial.

On June 20 and 21, Schenectady City School District students were hosted by Union College and Special Olympics NY for Unified Sports Day. In Schenectady Schools, we say "Everybody Counts, Everybody Learns" and now everybody plays. The day included opening ceremonies and parade, and six different competitions to build confidence, promote and support a healthy lifestyle, and surround our athletes and their families with a sense of belonging.

On Wednesday, the Office of Student Support Services presented changes to the Student Code of Character, Conduct, and Support. Watch the presentation to the Board of Education and take the time to offer your feedback through Let's Talk.

I wish you a restful and fun summer. During the recess, weekly brief's will be replaced by monthly briefs until school resumes, and I look forward to seeing many of you at Summer Enrichment Program, taking place between July 10 and August 4.

Sincerely,

Anibal Soler, Jr.
