Superintendent's Brief

SUPERINTENDENT'S BRIEF

Good afternoon and Happy Friday,

I will keep my brief short this week. I know everyone is ready for a break and anxious to get a start on your weekend and winter recess.

Congratulations to Meghann Nowak, a special education teacher at Schenectady High School, who was honored as WNYT's Top Teacher this week. The Top Teacher series highlights excellence in teaching and honors educators who have improved the lives of their students. Those who know and work with Ms. Nowak know exactly why she is deserving of this recognition. Please join me in congratulating her.

Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Bowling Team for earning 2nd place in Sectionals last Friday afternoon.

Congratulations to Jane Kitch-Willis, a Schenectady High School freshman, who on February 13 took first place in the Poetry Out Loud regional competition at Hudson Valley Community College and is advancing to the state competition which will be held March 9 at FIT in New York City.  Congrats to sophomore Dylan Slater who also represented SHS in the regional contest.

On Thursday, districts across the country celebrated School Resource Officer Appreciation Day. In our district, we recognize our Community Engagement Officers (CEOs) for working closely with our safety team, faculty and staff to keep our schools safe and building important relationships with the students, staff and families of Schenectady.

Watch the video to learn about the Law Enforcement Engagement Club that students and officers worked to create this school year.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, a group of Mont Pleasant Middle School Students participated in our first ever Student Empowerment Retreat. The retreat was led by the district's Restorative Practices Team on the Union College campus. It included leadership building activities, a keynote speaker, and work with mentors from the Union STEP Program. Thank you to all who made this opportunity available to our students. These students and our MBK Fellows are our future leaders.
