District breaks geound on new outdoor athletic facility and turf field

The Schenectady City School District held a ceremonial ground-breaking on October 19, 2023 as work begins on the new Mont Pleasant Middle School outdoor athletic facility.  The project which includes design and construction of a turf athletic field and expansion of the parking lot, kicks off the "Schenectady Revitalization Plan" presented by Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr.,  in the spring.

Soler, School Board President Bernice Rivera, Mayor Gary McCarthy, Legislator Omar McGill, Richard "Rit" DiCaprio, a graduate and former football player, William Kent, President of Schenectady Belmont, and others were on hand to express excitement about the upgrade planned for the facility.  Reconstruction of the Schenectady High School Tennis Courts is also underway.

While these renovations were not part of the referendum presented in May, Soler referred to it as the official kick-off to the revitalization plan that will be underway for the next several years.

The first projects, slated to begin soon include $25 million in construction, upgrades and renovations at Steinmetz Career and Leadership Academy (SCLA) and $11 million at Van Corlaer Elementary School.
