Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi (pronounced R-AH-K-REE) is a Hindu festival. This festival celebrates brother-sister relationships and sibling love. The term Raksha Bandhan originates from Sanskrit, and translates to “bond of protection.”


The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

Governor Kathy Hochul held a roundtable with New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) President Melinda Person, Capital Region school district administrators, teachers and other stakeholders to highlight their plans for implementing bell-to-bell smartphone restrictions when school resumes this fall. Capital Region school districts who participated in the discussion included the Albany City School District, Schenectady City School District, Utica City School District and East Greenbush Central School District
