Big Picture Learning

Schenectady High School offers hundreds of courses, electives and curriculum options designed to meet the needs and demands of a diverse student population.

The Schenectady City School District has embarked on a secondary school redesign process for grades 7-12 in 2022. The secondary redesign committee was formed and charged with reviewing ensuring that every student has a high quality education option, with a focus on college, career and military experiences for all students.

Our Secondary Redesign process was driven by our need to meet the vision of the SCSD: “Schenectady City Schools will be a continually improving school district dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, equity, engagement and efficiency.”  To ensure we developed pathways that aligned with Schenectady CSD’s Mission and Vision, we formed a Secondary Redesign Committee. Furthermore, The Redesign Committee intentionally engaged over 60 stakeholders with a secondary lens representing faculty, students, leaders, parents/guardians and community partners to provide valuable input on the Secondary Redesign process. Over 1,000 stakeholders completed a survey which allowed data to be collected and utilized when designing focused pathways that addressed the strengths and needs of the secondary schools. The steering committee then determined what learning communities were feasible in the 2022-2023 school year after coming to consensus on creating four “Leadership Community” Pathways in Phase I of the Secondary School Redesign.
