On Wednesday, April 15, the Schenectady City School District Board of Education approved a proposed budget for the 2026–2027 school year that maintains all current programs and services for students while continuing our commitment to fiscal responsibility and community stability.
The proposed budget totals $310,543,870, representing a $15 million (5.09%) increase over the current year. This increase is primarily driven by rising salary and benefit costs and is offset by New York State Foundation Aid, the district’s fund balance, and the expiration of prior debt.
Most importantly, for the eighth consecutive year, this budget includes a 0% tax levy increase. As a result, the budget requires a simple majority to pass.
The public budget hearing will take place on May 6, and residents will vote on the proposed budget and related propositions on May 19.
In addition to the annual budget, voters will consider three facility propositions designed to strengthen our schools, expand opportunities, and improve efficiency, all at no additional cost to taxpayers.
Residents will also vote to fill three Board of Education seats, including:
Two currently held seats
One vacant seat
The candidates receiving the highest number of votes will be elected.
Candidate petitions are due April 30, and additional information will be shared once finalized.
